![]() A root canal has several advantages over a tooth extraction and while a root canal is more expensive than getting a tooth extracted, it is always better to have your natural teeth. If one of your teeth gets badly infected, there are two options, a root canal or an extraction, so we will try to explain when you should get one versus the other. When to Get a Root CanalA root canal is usually performed when there is an infection in the tooth. Our dentist drills a hole to clean and drain the infection in the pulp. A root canal can also be used when there is a break or fracture in the tooth, for example, if you suffer a blow to the face. If this case, you may also need a crown to be added on top, to protect the tooth. When an Extraction is NeededSometimes, despite all our efforts, a tooth cannot be saved, and a tooth extraction is needed. You may also need a tooth extraction if you need your wisdom teeth removed because they are impacted and are shifting the rest of your teeth. Whether you're getting a root canal or a tooth extraction, there is a risk involved in both procedures, as each one is invasive. The removal is always more problematic because it can cause an infection depending on the extent of the problem and it leaves an empty space in the mouth, which can also cause teeth alignment issues. We will explain the pros and cons of getting a root canal versus and tooth extraction and answer any questions you may have. |
