![]() Why It is a Bad Idea The reason you brush your teeth is to remove the bacteria that grows on them. If the bacteria are not removed, plaque and tartar can form. This can lead to many problems including tooth decay, cavities, receding gums and gum disease. These are not things that anybody wants and that is why brushing is so important. The problem with brushing right away is that the bacteria have not had time to start their growth. Brushing is not able to remove what has not started yet. It takes about 20 minutes for the growth of bacteria to begin. What to Do So, if you don't brush your teeth right after eating what should you do. If you have eaten highly acidic foods or foods that are high in sugar, you can rinse them off by drinking a glass of water. After you do that, wait 30 minutes before you brush your teeth. The growth of bacteria will begin, and you can remove the bacteria instead of allowing them to build up on your teeth. There are some other reasons to wait after you eat to brush your teeth. You can allow your food to settle in your stomach before adding the taste of toothpaste to your mouth. There are many people who suffer an upset stomach from this combination. You can also develop a pattern for brushing your teeth at certain times of the day. Making it a habit means that you get the most out of your brushing and it helps you maintain happy and healthy teeth and gums.
