Signs You Need a Nighttime Mouth GuardDo you wake up with a sore jaw or even have headaches in combination with it? There are a variety of signs that you could benefit from a nighttime mouth guard.

You might not even be aware of how much you could benefit from one. Many people are shocked to find out some of the pains and ailments they were bothered by were resolved by a custom mouth guard.

Symptoms a Mouth Guard May Relieve

Headaches. If you start your morning after a good night's rest with a headache. The pain you are feeling could be the aftereffects of clenching your jaw or grinding during the night. If you are noticing that you have chipped or pieces of your teeth that have broken off. It can be a sign of bruxism. The term for frequent teeth grinding. If you have been diagnosed with TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). Sleeping while using a mouth guard will reduce your grinding, protect teeth, and minimize the pain associated with it. If you notice flat patches on your molars, it's a sign you are clenching and grinding during the night.

Types of Nighttime Mouth Guards

“Soft” night guards are the most commonly used forms of a nighttime mouth guard. They contain soft material inside and are comfortable, affordable, and easy to adapt to sleeping with. However, they don't last very long. Their warranties are usually short, around six months. “Dual Laminate” night guards are for medium to severe night grinding.

They handle hard clenches and tough grinding. They are durable and also have long warranty periods. They can be harder to adjust wearing due to their thickness. “Hard” night guards are acrylic and rigid. They handle extreme bruxism, are durable, and prevent tooth shifting. They are also custom made from a mold of your teeth at our office.

There are mouth guards you can purchase over the counter that are “boil and bite.” You soften with boiling and bite to mold. They are effective, but the most comfortable fit will be a custom fit guard from our office. If you are dealing with any of the signs above, give us a call or ask us about a nighttime guard at your next visit. We can assess and recommend the best option, of which, many can be covered by your insurance.
