As you know, distilled water has eliminated the bacteria from the water making dentistry possible under complete sterile environment.

Costa Mesa, CA woman smiling about the painless laser dentistry treatment she received. At Newport Dental Group, we utilize laser dentistry for both the soft and hard tissues of your mouth. Laser dentistry has been in use for about 20 years and is helpful for numerous applications. With laser dentistry, we can provide you with effective treatments to greatly improve the overall health of your mouth.

What is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry utilizes a specialized laser tool to perform a variety of different treatments. The laser is a high-intensity beam of light that is approximately the same thickness as a human hair. It is used to remove or shape tissue, and it can be set to different wavelengths depending upon what it is being used for.

Uses for Laser Dentistry

There are some different uses for laser dentistry:
•  Periodontal treatment: When you have gum disease, your gums swell. They pull away from your teeth, creating pockets. This allows bacteria to fall below the gum line. Scaling and root planing is a common treatment used for removing build-up on your teeth and their roots. However, in some cases, swollen gums can get in the way of a thorough cleaning. The laser can be used to remove infected tissue, providing the access needed to clean your teeth properly.
•  Tooth decay: Lasers are used to remove decay from cavities and prepare the cavities for fillings.
•  Root canal treatments: Lasers are used to remove bacteria from the inside of an infected tooth.
•  Teeth whitening: The laser enhances the effects of the bleaching agent applied to your teeth.
•  Oral surgery: Lasers are often preferred over the scalpel because of their ability to limit bleeding during your surgical procedure. Less anesthesia is needed because the laser has pain dissolving properties. The laser also causes significantly less tissue trauma, which results in less post-surgical pain and swelling.
•  Diagnosing tumors (and other lesions): The laser is used to remove samples of suspect tissue.

Benefits of Laser Dentistry

There are several benefits involved with the use of laser dentistry:
•  Bleeding is minimized when the laser is used to cut soft tissues.
•  Tissue trauma is minimized. This helps to greatly reduce pain and swelling.
•  Lasers provide pinpoint accuracy.
•  Because the laser reduces pain, there is less need for general anesthesia.
•  Lasers allow you to heal faster.
•  Anxiety is greatly reduced. Dental drills and sharp scalpels are common causes of dental anxiety, which can lead patients to avoid dental treatment. Lasers replace these tools, helping to ease anxiety.

Are There Any Risks Involved with Laser Dentistry?

Many patients often wonder about the safety of laser dentistry. The use of a laser is just as safe as using other tools to perform dental procedures. The laser does emit a bright light, which can be harmful to your eyes. For this reason, you are provided with a special pair of glasses. We are highly trained in the use of the dental laser and have plenty of experience, which helps to minimize the risks.
